A Bit of Good News

I don’t know about you, but I am tired of the bad news dominating our airwaves and even our normal everyday conversation. Some days I barely glance at the television and when my husband turns it on, he quickly moves from the news to a game show or some other lighthearted fare.

Fortunately, we do have some good news—Christmas brings the good news of the birth of Jesus Christ, Savior of the World.

What’s the good news

Jesus Christ is not only the Savior of the world —the One who came to save us from our sins— but He is also Immanuel, God with us. We are not alone in our troubles. He is with us to take away our heavy burden of sin, to comfort us and give us hope of a brighter tomorrow.

The prophecy

Seven hundred years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Isaiah prophesied,  “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel (7: 14).

Note the word “virgin” above. Mary, the mother of Christ, was a virgin when she was conceived. Years later, the gospel writers Matthew and Luke confirm this.

Matthew puts it this way, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”) (1:23).

Luke records the conversation between Mary and the angel. After greeting her with the words, “highly favored, he says to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus” (Luke 1: 30-31).

God’s gift to us

At Christmas time we look forward to giving and receiving gifts. God gave His greatest gift to us in the form of His Son. And no exchange is needed. He gives, and we receive. End of story.

Why a Savior?

“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3: 23). God, loving Father that He is, sent His only Son into the world to die to redeem His children back to Him “not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3: 9).

So, do you still think that Christmas is just some beautiful fairytale? Let me assure you it is not. It is as real as Christ is. But don’t take my word for it. Receive the gift that God has given us —His Son Jesus Christ—and when you do, He will make Himself real to you.
