Can You Get Coronavirus From Food?

Someone asked this question about contracting COVID – 9 from food. Here’s what the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has to say about this.

Coronaviruses (of which COVID-19 is one) is spread from person to person through respiratory droplets when someone with the virus coughs or sneezes. This is why everyone needs to cover their cough either by coughing or sneezing into your elbow or using a tissue.

According to the CDC, there is no evidence to show that you can get the virus from food. Of course, you need to follow hand-washing guidelines by washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before preparing or eating food.

The CDC adds, “It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object, like a packaging container, that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from food products or packaging.”

Also, you cannot get the virus from cooked food since “heat will kill any pathogens present in the food being cooked, and reheating takeout is one avenue you can take if you’re concerned. Raw food is also unlikely to cause COVID-19, even if it’s contaminated by a cough or sneeze. The reason for this is because respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 reproduce in your respiratory tract,15 not your digestive tract, which is where your food goes,” writes Dr. Joseph Mercola on his article Can You Clean Coronavirus Off Your Food?
