Mental Health And Coronavirus

The state-mandated precautions for keeping people safe during coronavirus are impacting everyone’s lives, and as far as mental health is concerned, not all of it is positive.

Some type 2 diabetics and others who suffer from depression are already used to isolation. However, social distancing can take isolation to a new level.

If you live alone and find yourself becoming depressed because you are forced to stay at home and can’t have friends over, here are some things you can do:

  • Stay connected. You can reach others by phone, email, text messages or even Skype.
  • Let others know how you feel. Do you feel lonely, afraid, anxious? Keeping your feelings bottled up can lead to increased hopelessness and depression, which may even lead to suicidal thoughts.
  • Occupy your mind. During the chaos and uncertainty we are now experiencing, it’s easy to ruminate on all that is taking place. Keeping your mind occupied with things you enjoy such as reading, listening to music or working on a hobby will help you take your mind off the pandemic.
  • Maintain good eating habits. Now is not the time to binge on junk food and/or alcohol. You can sabotage all the good work you put in by going off your diet for a couple weeks.
  • Keep up with your physical activity. Now more than ever you need the mental boost that comes from walking in the sunshine or biking around the block. If you cannot go out, you can still exercise to the many videos available on the internet.
  • Don’t neglect prayer and meditation. This is last but not least. Prayer and meditation calm your spirits, energize you and give you hope. Most of all, they remind you that Someone is looking after you and will protect you.

If you still feel incapable of coping with the coronavirus on your own, please call your doctor or other healthcare professional. To find out how I can assist you with healthcare goals, please go to the link below.
