Today we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, the revered civil rights leader who was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, delivered at the 1963 march on Washington before a crowd of around 250,000 people is one of the most famous speeches in history, and is often referred to by activists and other public figures.
However, more than five decades after Dr. King delivered that speech, many will say that the dream has not been fully realized. Some of the causes for which he and other civil rights leaders fought still remain an illusive dream. African Americans are still judged by the color of their skin, they are still paid lower wages than whites, and are subjected to racism and bigotry in the workplace and elsewhere.
But does that mean we should stop dreaming? The observances all over the country today shout a resounding no. People are still inspired by Dr. King’s stirring message as they continue to struggle for freedom and justice for all. What is your dream? Do you have a dream that one day you will carry your ideal weight, be healthy, looking and feeling your best, not dependent on medication, able to do all the things you would love to do?
If the answer is yes, then don’t give up on your dream. Write it down, say it, commit it to God, and watch it come to pass. Even though Dr. King’s dream has not been fully realized, we have made great strides. Twelve years ago, we elected our first black president, our schools, restaurants and other public places are no longer segregated, and one look at the marches today will show people of every color marching together hand in hand in unity.
Don’t give up on your dream. Let the message of hope that rang out over the Washington mall fifty-seven years ago echo in your consciousness and instill in you a deeper determination to achieve your dream. God bless you.
